How fit do I need to be? |

Salsa is quite energetic when it is danced outside of class - but during the class you just need enough stamina to stay on your feet for about an hour or so. Reasonable arm and leg mobility is required, for comfort as much as anything else.

Do I need to do the course with a partner? |

The courses are open to single people and people with partners. It's our intention to keep the gender mixed fairly balanced with each course so we will monitor the bookings to make sure we are going to achieve a balance - we will let you know well in advance if there is likely to be a problem. The most common problem is encouraging enough guys to join but we can cope comfortably with about 10% more girls

Do we dance all the time with the same partner? |

No. Partners are rotated during the lesson. This means you don't develop an habits of familiarity that will make it difficult to dance with more than one person - unlike other forms of partner dance, salsa is not choreographed - we are able to dance complex patterns with people we've never danced with before - and ability to do this starts in the classes.

What should I wear? |

It's not like the dancing on the telly! No sparkly jumpsuits or big flash frocks! That's competition wear - we tend to go in for t-shirts and jeans in a class - comfortable clothes - nothing that's going to make you feel too hot or too restricted in your movements. Even on dancenights the guys dress down, if anything. The girls will dress a little more interestingly (on a dancenight) but class-wear is whatever you feel comfortable in.
It is worth saying though, that it's best to avoid shoes with grippy soles - so trainers aren't really best. Any who with a leather or suede sole will be ok - you need to be able to pivot around on the ball of your foot on a wooden floor without your foot gripping in place. You can have dance shoes made to order for around £100 or you can buy them off the shelf more cheaply but you will probably have something suitable already. You can get away with trainers for the first couple of classes if you want want to try out different types of footwear. Please note that for the classes we can't allow pointy high heels as they will damage the floors - but for dancenights heels are popular and look good! Moreso on the girls though...

Should I consider doing the course more than once? |

Whilst the course covers all you need to know to go dancing and to attend our Improver classes repitition is always valuable. It is the norm for people to keep attending classes where core technique is taught for many months, if not years, whilst also attending classes at a higher level. You will find there is always something to be gained by attending classes where core technique is taught. For this reason it is worth considering attending more than one Beginners course so you can really get the moves nailed. If you have previously attended a beginners course we will discount your attendance on future courses. And whilst you are attending any Beginners course the cost of attending an Improver class on the same evening is reduced from £4 to £2 (we recommend that you complete at least one Beginners course before attending an Improver class)
