Salsa Kernow - we're back in Bovey from this Friday!
The theatricals have vacated the Town Hall at Bovey
Tracey so we're back from Friday 31st November with
a slightly different programme to normal... this programme
will run on the following Fridays: Oct 31st and Nov
7th and 14th
7.30-8.00 Absolute Beginners drop-in class
- £2
Covering the basic footwork and partnerwork
(we'll repeat this class for each of these Fridays)
8.00-8.45 Technique drop-in class - £3
Got the basics (from the earlier class)? Now step
up a gear to learn some of the core salsa moves!
8.45-9.00 Practice time - free
9.00-10.00 Improver drop-in class £4
More complicated - even more fun!
10.00-10.30 Practice time - free
From November 28th the programme changes again to
accommodate our 'Cool Moves For Christmas' (Improver
level) course - the course will fill the 7.30-8.45
slot followed by our usual 9.00-10.00 Improver drop-in
class plus the practice sessions.

Bovey Dancenight this Saturday!
For
online info about this event click here
It's a big night at the Town Hall THIS Saturday -
people say our dancenights in Bovey are the friendliest
they've attended - come and find out why!
Here's
the programme...
8.00-9.00 Improver class £4
The
usual wonderful and orignal dance pattern stuff!
9.00-midnight Dancing! £4
Class and dancing £7
PLUS - for one night only! The wonderful Fernando
and Tara from Vida De Tango will be demonstrating
Argentinian Tango (sometime between 9.00 and midnight!).
These guys are VERY good! So you don't want to miss
this show. Most people I know who are outside the
tango scene haven't seen tango as it is danced informally
at the milongas - forget ballroom tango - that's as
far from what we're staging on Saturday as salsa on
Strictly is from the way we dance it! Prepare to be
seduced by this magical and esoteric danceform. We're
staging this because these guys are teaching very
accessible tango drop-in classes in Exeter, Torquay
and Plymouth - it's a new scene and it's very likely
you'll want to be a part of it! This show is free
so if you just want to come and watch please do -
but I can't be more specific about the time it'll
happen, but hey, there'll be plenty of other things
going on!
And to continue the tradition, there will be coloured
lights again. We just don't hold back for you guys!

Okehampton Salsa Dancenight - Saturday 8th November
- in aid of the RBL Poppy Appeal
For
online info about this event click here
Salsa Kernow is also honoured to have been asked to
run a salsa dancenight for the Royal British Legion
Poppy Appeal. All the proceeds are being donated to
the Appeal.
There's a large a good quality dancefloor at the venue
(harter Hall, Market St, Okehampton, Devon EX20 1AA)
and we'll be playing our usual mix of wonderfully
danceable salsa, bachata and cha cha (but mostly salsa!).
Here's the programme:
7.30-8.15 Absolute Beginners class
Never tried salsa before or tried it and forgotten
everything? Come and experience our unique intro session
that teaches you far more than might believe possible!
8.15-9.00 Improver class and shines
For the more experienced dancers - a very cool move
you can light up the floor with later!
9.00-midnight Dancing, DJ'd by Salsa Kernow
Whole evening price: £7
Classes only £4 (you can do both for this price)
Dancing only: £5
PLUS - if you make it to this event we are
offering 25% off the price of either of our 4-week
courses: 'Cool Moves For Christmas' (starting 28th
Nov in Bovey) or 'Salsa Beginners' (starting 16th
Jan in Bovey). On top of that, for every person who
books on we will donate £5 to the Poppy appeal!
The normal course price is £20 per person -
so it's now yours for £15 (and from that we'll
donate a fiver to the RBL).

Dancing
and the martial arts!
There's been a useful two-way conversation going on
in the Blog on our website - one of the most recent
posters to the topic 'How you learn salsa' made this
comment...
Hey! Just stumbled across your article when I was
theorizing about my judo & jiu jitsu practice.
Seems like there are 4 stages to learning a move:
1. learning & refining. 2. Drilling it without
resistance. 3. Practicing it with resistance. 4. Integrating
it into the game.
As
Salsa doesn't involve a resisting partner, seems like
the learning stages are exactly the same as martial
arts, or grappling at least.
Food for thought: maybe martial artists could expand
their brainspace & reflex neurons by learning
to dance ! What a wonderful thing the internet is.
I think I'll give my ex-girlfriend who's now a Salsa
teacher a call...
It's
an interesting comment, though I'm not so sure about
his observation that salsa doesn't involve a 'resisting
partner' (and you can interpret that phrase any way
you like!).
