Secret Salsa comes to the rescue again!
When
we ran our first Secret Salsa event in Ashburton on
15 June we didn't expect our services would be required
so soon after!
Well, you obviously can't keep a good idea down! Due
to an appalling lack of salsa in the diary this coming
Saturday 5th July we will be running another Secret
Salsa to rescue your weekend!
This time, the venue is the Town Hall in Bovey Tracey
(there will be a map to both the venue and the car
parking in the event listing on our website just as
soon as I can get to it!)
As before, we'll be running an Improver class from
8-9pm and then there's dancing until 12am. The cost
is £4 for the lesson, £4 for the dancing
or £7 for both. No bar so bring your own drinks!
If the concept is new to you here it is in a nutshell...
we monitor the Events diary - when nothing else is
on we will try to find a venue at the last minute
and stage a dancenight for you - it'll always be with
very little notice - the emphasis will be on really
danceable music and not so much on fairy lights -
these events will always be friendly and easy-going
- just turn up and enjoy! This is a Salsa
Kernow service!

Beginners Course starts in Bovey this Friday 4th
July!
We
are starting a new 8 week Beginners/Technique course
this coming Friday 4th July in Bovey Tracey.
There are still places on the course - so if you would
like to sign up email
Ian or call 07801 889463. You can get
away with turning up on the first night but we like
to keep the numbers fairly balanced so best to call
before if you can.
After the course has started we should be able to
accommodate people on a drop-in basis - as long as
you can do the basic step you will be able to participate
- we cover all the core stuff so each class is dedicated
to a move such as Cross Body Lead, Clockwise Turns,
Left Turns, Half Crucifix, Full Crucifix and Changing
Places.
Our Beginners/Technique courses have been wildly successful
this year so book your place now and find out what
makes them so good!
And as usual, we will be running our Improver level
drop-in class from 9-10 each evening.
The course costs £40 for 8wks (£35pp if
you book as a couple) - £5 per class if you
attend occasionally. Drop-in Improver classses are
£4 (£8 for both classes).

Siga La Salsa at Babbacombe
We say... Siga La Salsa are THE salsa band in the
South West! We've been to four of their gigs over
the last few months and they never fail to impress
with a great sound, great spirit and a deep understanding
of what makes great dance music!
Unsurprisingly then, their gig at the tail-end concert
at the end of the Babbacombe Festival was a blast.
And despite (or because of?) a fairly small dancefloor
and a variety of wandering sprogs the dancers had
a pretty good time of it as you will see from the
pictures on our website - click
here to view!
Nothing beats dancing to a live band - so if you get
a chance to catch a Siga gig go check them out - here's
their web address: www.sigalasalsa.co.uk
This is the second time Salsa Kernow has supported
the band with a pre-performance Salsa Intro class
- the formula seems to work well - especially with
the help of our local salseros - thanks guys!
(See also the 'And finally...' item at the end of
this Newsletter - the video was filmed at the gig).

Moose
at the Rugby Club
June's Moose dancenight fell victim to a double
booking so Rodney booked us all into the Conference
Suite at the Rugby Club in Sandy Gate, Exeter.
The large, bright dancefloor was a bit intimidating
in the early part of the evening but things started
to roll as the sun set.
The venue is expensive so it's back to the Moose this
month (see events listing above), though Rodney says
he may use the Rugby Club again for the occasional
special dancenight.
Despite the venue change there was a pretty good turnout
(see photos of the event on our website by clicking
here).
I managed to get a bit of a grump on when one of the
DJs started drumming to the music. Salsa percussion
is a very precise thing so any additional percussion
that doesn't follow the rules can easily become intrusive
- and when the volume balance favours those drums
and drowns the percussion in the recording there's
always a risk that the music will become very difficult
to dance to. This was the case when our drummer got
himself a bit carried away - hopefully it's a lesson
learned and a more restrained approach will be adopted
in future!
But despite this moan it was a good night - Moose
(wherever located) always delivers a positive vibe
under the quite but watchful control of Rodney, our Master
or Ceremonies!
